Most ads for Apple Watch bands are just dropshippers selling you cheap generic bands directly off Aliexpress. They'll often sell PU (fake) or technically "genuine leather" bands, but in most cases it's just made using much cheaper, significantly less durable lower layers of a split animal hide. What you actually want are the uppermost layers called Top and especially Full Grain. That's the actual surface layer of the hide with much denser fibers that are tightly "woven" together and gives high-quality leather its famous durability.
